Lead Safe Communities is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose primary goal is to eliminate childhood lead poisoning, a significant environmental disease affecting 1-2% of all children under age 6.

Lead Abatement

Lead Safe Communities is focused on preventative, housing-oriented strategies because most cases of childhood lead poisoning are due to housing-related hazards (e.g. lead-based paint and lead-contaminated soil). We provide no-cost, innovative, self-sustaining activities (outreach and education, training, lead hazard identification and remediation referral services, etc.) intended to address lead exposure and protect children.

Lead Safe Communities supports the following community-based solutions to eliminate this entirely preventable disease:
1. Require all housing inspectors (code enforcement officers, building officials, etc.) to attend a 1-2 hour training class on (a) how to conduct visual inspections for lead hazards and (b) how to enforce existing laws governing lead hazards in housing.

2. Require all county health departments to publicize the total number of children with elevated blood lead levels residing in each city within the county. This information will empower cities to prioritize lead hazard activities in high-risk communities.

3. Implement a lead hazard code enforcement program by levying a $1 per rental unit fee in high-risk communities, using the funds to hire and train housing inspectors to conduct lead hazard inspections.

4. Require simple, inexpensive "Lead-Safe" remodeling requirements for older homes (e.g. pre-1950) to prevent children from being poisoned by leaded dust generated by remodeling activities.
